The Golden Slipper Stakes is a race solely for two year olds that run at special weights; 54 kg for colts and geldings and 51 kg for fillies. The Golden Slipper Stakes is held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney and runs over 1200 metres on turf at set weights. It is the premier two year old race in Australia and the world's richest race for two-year-old thoroughbreds. The race is held on the Saturday before Good Friday in conjunction with a series of races known as the 'Golden Slipper Carnival'. Prize money in 2006 was $3.0 million.
The first Golden Slipper Stakes tooks place in 1957 with 11 runners and was won by Todman, a great colt. Over the next four years the winners of the Golden Slipper were all sired by the sire Star Kingdom whose sire lines can still be found in the breeding of many of today's winners.
Past Golden Slipper winners include Forensics, Miss Finland, Stratum, Dance Hero, Polar Success, Calaway Gal, Ha Ha and Belle du Jour.
