Venus Williams vs Francesca Schiavone – Head-to-head Williams leads 7-0 but the last two times Venus and Francesca played it was very close. Schiavone is playing confidently and Venus really needs to bring her best game to win this encounter. Bet on Venus to win 2-1.

Kim Clijsters vs Samantha Stosur – Australian Stosur beat one of the favourites (Elena Dementieva) but next up is the none other than Kim Clijsters. Kim and Sam have met three times on hard-courts and Sam has not won a single set against her. Bet on Kim to win in straight sets.

Men:

Rafael Nadal vs Feliciano Lopez – Nadal will win easily exploiting Lopez non-existing backhand. Feliciano is actually not a bad player, but mentally and physically he is inconsistent. Bet on Rafael to win in straight sets.

David Ferrer vs Fernando Verdasco – Verdasco is a bad match-up for Ferrer because he is a bigger server and has bigger forehand, but most importantly he knows how to outplay his opponent with a non-aggressive game. Bet on Fernando to win.

Stanislas Wawrinka vs Sam Querrey – Finally the Swiss’ talent has confirmed his potential. He’s played fabulous tennis and sent Andy Murray packing. I am sure he is very confident at this stage and will know how to outplay the American’s only weapon, his giant serve. Bet on Stanislas to win.

Mikhail Youzhny vs Tommy Robredo – The Russian’s shots are too much for the Spaniard to handle. Youzhny is not a good match up for Robredo and unless the Russian retires, I don’t see the Spaniard making the next round. Bet on Mikhail to win.

Svetlana Kuznetsova vs Dominika Cibulkova – Kuznetsova should win fairly comfortable because Cibulkova doesn’t have the weapons to trouble her. The Russian has a great shot at this title and looks very confident at the moment to go all the way. Bet on Svetlana to win at $1.25.

Kaia Kanepi vs Yanina Wickmayer – Wickmayer is looking forward to defend her last year’s semi-final spot. She works harder than most of the girls on tour and the results have started to show. Bet on Yanina to win at $2.18.

Andrea Petkovic vs Vera Zvonareva – The German’s mind strength isn’t up to the task of challenging an experienced player like Zvonareva. Bet on Vera to win at $1.25.

Robin Soderling vs Albert Montanes – I can’t see Montanes getting a set on hard-court if Soderling plays well. The Swede should win this in three sets. Bet on Robin to win in straight sets at $1.50.

Novak Djokovic vs Mardy Fish – The American is the hottest player on tour at this stage with a 19-2 record since Wimbledon. Fish is just less prone to unforced errors and is serving better too. Djokovic loves these courts but is not playing his best tennis. Bet on Mardy to win at $3.45.

Gael Monfils vs Richard Gasquet – An all-French affair with Richard’s game still looking a bit fragile. Monfils is mentally tougher and can count on his opponent’s poor fitness to win. Bet on Gael to win at $2.03.

Although FFA stepped in at short notice to assure the game took place, it remains unclear as to whether they are willing to guarantee Newcastle’s short-term survival. However, the prospect of a club folding mid-season would be viewed as an absolute last resort, given the ramifications that decision would have on the remainder of the season.

Jets Chief Executive John Tsatsimas has admitted the club’s financial crisis is reaching breaking point, with staff and players having gone unpaid for the past two weeks.

“It’s a big concern and we’re having more discussions with the FFA but it can’t go on,” Tsatsimas said.

“It has to have some sort of end to it and now, because it will play on players’ minds.

“It’s a major concern from where I sit because we have people who have been united for two weeks now, but there comes a point where that will end,” he said.

Should the FFA not come to Newcastle’s aid then Constantine’s last resort will be an appeal to the NSW government, primarily on the grounds that it is unfair his club is currently being forced to effectively sublet EnergyAustralia Stadium from NRL side Newcastle Knights – the venue’s major tenants – and as such have no control over match day income. But any such appeal is unlikely to bring about a swift resolution, which is precisely what the Jets need.

Newcastle coach Branko Culina says his players have remained united in the midst of the club’s financial adversity, but – speaking after yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Brisbane – admitted they are feeling the pinch.

“We had a chat to the club on Tuesday and we agreed that we would play the game and not look for any excuses that would put the game into jeopardy and from there on we were focused,” he said.

“You try and not let it bother you but you can’t help it – you get up in the morning and you read the papers, you are driving in your car and you hear the radio or see the TV and it is about no longer having Newcastle around, so it does play up on people’s minds.

“There is no doubt some might have been affected but it in the end we just wanted to go out there and play the game,” Culina said.

Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners sit on eight points and are equal third, three points clear of North Queensland Fury, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart, who celebrated their maiden A-League win after defeating the Fury 1-0 at AAMI Park last night. Wellington are in eighth place with four points from as many matches, while Newcastle Jets are a point behind in ninth. Gold Coast United are anchored to the bottom of the table with Sydney on two points, however – courtesy of two weekend breaks – they have played just three matches compared to the reigning champions’ five.

The sky blues are in need of some soul searching after their disappointing loss to Adelaide and coach Vitezslav Lavicka has a tough job ahead of him as he hopes to rally his troops for next Saturday’s trip to Wellington. Lavicka will be sweating on the fitness of key striker Alex Brosque and captain Terry McFlynn for the clash with the Phoenix, who have not lost at home for two years.

The return of Mile Sterjovski after a one-week absence due to an ankle injury was a timely one for Perth as the former Socceroo was instrumental in his side’s victory against Wellington. Sterjovski opened the scoring after five minutes and then set up marquee man Robbie Fowler for the Glory’s second goal not long after half time. Perth will be looking for more of the same at nib Stadium next Sunday afternoon when they host Gold Coast.

In today’s other match, Newcastle and Brisbane fought out a tough 0-0 draw at Energy Australia Stadium in front of just over 7,000 fans. Both teams had chances to win the match in the closing stages, but the Jets would have been happy to finish with a point following Ruben Zadkovich’s 81st minute exit thanks to a second yellow card. Next Saturday the Jets make their second trip to Adelaide this season to take on the reds, while the Roar travel to Melbourne to battle the Victory next Sunday afternoon.

On Friday night Central Coast- spurred on by the controversial mid-week suspension of midfielder Patricio Perez – cruised to a 2-0 win at home against the Victory. Goals to Rostyn Griffiths and Daniel McBreen were enough to give new coach Graham Arnold his first win at Bluetongue Stadium. The Mariners are at home again next Friday night when they take on Melbourne Heart and will be confident of replicating their 1-0 win over the A-League new boys in round one.

North Queensland have the bye in round six, while Melbourne Victory and Wellington will back up for the mid-week match on the following Wednesday night at AAMI Park.

Shahar Peer vs Venus Williams – The American has overpowered Peer each time they have met, with five straight sets wins, all with less than 20 games played. Williams should do the same now at the US Open, with the support of home crowd. Bet on Under 19.5 Games at $1.87.

Samantha Stosur vs Elena Dementieva – Dementieva is 4-0 against Stosur on hard-courts. Apart from the serve, everything the former finalist possesses is better than the Aussie on this surface and Stosur is far beyond her Roland Garros form. Bet on Elena to win at $1.65.

Francesca Schiavone vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova – Pavlyuchenkova is playing amazingly aggressivel while Schiavone is a good defender. The Italian is full of confidence and shouldn’t lose to the youngster. Bet on Francesca to win at $2.12.

Mikhail Youzhny vs John Isner – The American is not fit enough to serve at his best for five sets and in this case John doesn’t stand a chance against the Russian, who is all-round a much better player. It might get tight but the outcome is obvious. Bet on Mikhail to win at $1.65.

Sam Querrey vs Nicolas Almagro – This could be the longest match of the day between not the most consistent players on the Tour. The American is slightly favored on hard-court and with home crowd support but Almagro has a good chance too. Bet on Over 39.5 Games at $1.75.

Andy Murray vs Stanislas Wawrinka – Wawrinka’s has only once beaten a top 20 player at a Grand Slam. Murray is 3-0 head-to-head and is playing very well at the moment. It should be an easy match for Andy. Bet on Under 35.5 Games at $1.87.

David Nalbandian vs Fernando Verdasco – Nalbandian is currently very consistent and Verdasco’s form is less than convincing at the moment. The Argentine is a bad match up for Spaniard. Bet on David to win at $1.58.

Feliciano Lopez vs Sergiy Stakhovsky – Stakhovsky is better but might be exhausted after playing a ton of tennis the last two weeks. But there is a big advantage too when playing a lot and gaining the confidence necessary to win this kind of matches. Bet on Sergiy to win at $1.93.

Tommy Robredo vs Michael Llodra – Robredo has a decent record at the US Open but injury doubts combined with a lack of motivation have seen the Spaniard playing bad tennis this season. He hates big servers and Llodra is in top form at the moment. Bet on Michael to win at $2.28.

David Ferrer vs Daniel Gimeno-Traver – This will be the end of Gimeno-Traver’s nice run at Flushing Meadows because Ferrer is a bad match-up for him in this all-Spanish clash. Bet on David to win in straight sets at $1.84.

Beatrice Capra vs Maria Sharapova – One of the favorites to win the title, the Russian will smash Capra because Beatrice will be tired after difficult match against Rezai and has no experience to play against such powerful opponents. Bet on Under 18.5 Games at $1.87.

Svetlana Kuznetsova vs Maria Kirilenko – Really tough to predict, with Kirilenko who has won both matches against Kuznetsova this year but Svetlana has shown better form lately and should use her experience to prevail here. Bet on Svetlana to win at $1.37.

Caroline Wozniacki vs Yung-Jan Chan – Wozniacki lost only two games in two matches so far at Flushing Meadows and I don’t see Chan to play better than Caroline’s previous opponents here, so another short and easy match for the top seed. Bet on Under 16.5 Games at $1.65.

Alexandra Dulgheru vs Vera Zvonareva – Zvonareva doesn’t seem to be in such great form. The Romanian is underrated and I am sure she is able at least to give a fight, so should be tight at the end. Bet on Over 18.5 Games at $1.95.

Patty Schnyder vs Yanina Wickmayer – Wickmayer’s warm-up in Montreal and New Haven wasn’t convincing and will have a difficult match against Schnyder, because the veteran Swiss player has all the weapons in her game to produce the surprise here. Bet on Patty to win at $3.05.

Shuai Peng vs Andrea Petkovic – Peng has been injured a lot this year and has not the physical capacity to stand a chance in front of the German youngster, who has a big game and is looking forward to perform well at a Grand Slam tournament. Bet on Andrea to win at $1.55.

Lourdes Dominguez Lino vs Dominika Cibulkova – On hardcourts Cibulkova starts with the first chance and I don’t see the Spaniard being able outplaying Dominika in any way. Bet on Dominika to win at $1.30.

James Blake vs Novak Djokovic – A “written-off” Blake is playing inspiring tennis and could pose problems especially with the crowd heavily cheering for him. Djokovic isn’t playing all that well to win in straight sets. Bet on Over 35.5 Games at $1.93.

Robin Soderling vs Thiemo de Bakker – Soderling is the huge favorite but de Bakker is not a bad player. The Swede is not so stable to win in straight sets two matches in a row. Bet on Robin to win 3-1 at $3.45.

Arnaud Clement vs Mardy Fish – Clement has finally found some form and knows how to outplay Fish, winning in straight sets last 2 hard court matches he has played against Mardy. It looks like this is going to be a thriller that can go either way. Bet on Over 33.5 Games at $1.83.

Gael Monfils vs Janko Tipsarevic – Tipsarevic should win and owns Monfils usually in the head-to-head records, defeating the Frenchman three times with just one set lost. Bet on Tipsarevic to win at $1.87.

Jurgen Melzer vs Juan Carlos Ferrero – There is a big difference between the players’ physical capacities at this stage because Ferrero hasn’t come close to dropping a set, while Melzer has played five setters. Bet on Juan Carlos to win at $1.70.

Albert Montanes vs Kei Nishikori – It depends on Kei’s condition after the five hour tough match against Cilic because Montanes is going to grind and make him work. The Spaniard has defeated Kei on hard court in straight sets before. Bet on Albert to win at $2.18.

Richard Gasquet vs Kevin Anderson – If Anderson serves at 75% like he did with Bellucci, Gasquet will have a tough time. Only one tie-break won by the South African should be enough to have an opened match until the end. Bet on Over 39.5 Games at $1.87.

The world’s richest club, bought out in 2008 by a consortium of Arabic sheikhs, has certainly been stating its intent with manager Mark Hughes’ spending during the current transfer window overshadowed only by Florentino Perez’s Real Madrid. This resulted in the transfers of a number of high profile players such as Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz, James Milner, Jerome Boateng, Yaya Toure, Aleksandar Kolarov, David Silva and Mario Bolatelli.

Much has been made of City’s attempts to attract high-profile “marquee players”. Kaka turned down an astronomical offer in January 2009 and Samuel Eto’o was similarly pursued this summer before Hughes ended his interest. Also courted was Chelsea and England captain John Terry, with Hughes offering a “new challenge” to the Blues’ talisman. However these plans fell through.

So how do City line up now? In Shay Given, they have a solid and reliable goalkeeper who was often a hero for Newcastle. In front of Given are young England hopeful Micah Richards and Chelsea old boy Wayne Bridge, and newcomer Jerome Boateng. Shaun Wright-Phillips will provide pace and width on the attack and Gareth Barry and Stephen Ireland will look to form a solid central midfield partnership. Latest acquisition James Milner is looking to be the middleman as he’s shown his best form over the past 18 months in that position. On the attacking force will be Emmanuel Adebayor, Craig Bellamy, Roque Santa Cruz and Carlos Tevez.

On paper, Hughes has a large selection of talent at his disposal, with a formidable attacking force capable of breaking open any defence. Surely his biggest issue will be finding a successful rotation policy which can accommodate the egos of his new superstars and at the same time, bring out the best in each individual. For example, it’s unlikely that Tevez will be satisfied with warming the bench for another season and, despite his undoubted talent, many Arsenal fans last season questioned the dedication of Adebayor.

The last time that the top four was breached by one of the “lesser” clubs was in 2005 when Everton displaced rivals Liverpool for fourth place. If Manchester City are to do the same this season, who are they most likely to replace? Current title holders Manchester United would seem a very unlikely option given the depth of their squad and the astute mind of manager Alex Ferguson, but some may question how they will cope in the absence of two of their most influential attacking players in Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Chelsea are expected to be much improved from last season, assuming they can stick with Ancelotti for the duration. However, last year’s FA Cup winners will always be a danger, particularly with a fully-fit Michael Essien.

Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger insists on putting his faith in youth. Last season they struggled without the influential Fabregas for several months and suffered from squabbles between defenders Gallas and Eboue. The lack of experience within the team was at times painfully apparent but early into this season it looks like things have turned around somewhat.

Liverpool’s owners are in financial difficulties and it’s unlikely they will be as impressive as last season in pushing United for the title. They lack too much in the creative talent department and appear to be the most likely team to make way for Manchester City in the top four. Whatever the outcome, the stage is set for one of the most exciting seasons in Premier League history.
