To some surprise Japanese racehorse Delta Blues won the 2006 Melbourne Cup. This is only the third time a foreign horse has won the Melbourne Cup, following Vintage Crop in 1993 and Media Puzzle in 2002. However it is the first time the Melbourne Cup has been won by a Japanese or Asian horse.
Second place was taken by Pop Rock, also a Japanese horse. Both Delta Blues and Pop Rock are trained by Katsuhiko Sumii of Japan.
In third place was the Aussie gelding Maybe Better.
