George Podmore passes away

Melbourne Cup winning jockey George Podmore passed away on Sunday afternoon aged 79 after a long battle with illness. Padmore won the big two-mile feature aboard Evening Peal in 1956 after the pair teamed to win the VRC-AJC Australian Oaks double the previous season. Twice a runner-up to the legendary George Moore in the Sydney premiership, Podmore also tasted success in other feature races most notably the Sydney Cup, three Metropolitan Handicaps, a Doomben Cup and a Stradbroke Handicap .

Katsidis heading south

Champion Queensland jockey Stathi Katsidis will be heading to Sydney to be the stable rider for Gerald Ryan next month. Katsidis has already been confirmed as the new rider for smart colt Snitzel. Glen Boss rode the one time Golden Slipper favourite during his two-year-old campaign. Owner Damion Flower wanted Boss to make a commitment to continue riding Snitzel during the spring but the two time Melbourne Cup winning jockey was unable to do so.
