Carpenter was asked to select the best 24 winners of the Melbourne Cup for inclusion in the book "The Story of the Melbourne Cup, Australia's Greatest Race" which was recently unveiled at a ceremony in Melbourne. The Spring Carnival may clash With AFL Grand Final! The AFL is considering shifting next year's Grand Final from the last Saturday in September to the first weekend in October setting it on a collision course with the 1st day of the Flemington spring racing and the Turnbull Stakes. The move is being considered to accommodate the arrival of the AFL's 17th team, Gold Coast. It is expected that the AFL season will also be extended to 24 weeks from next year with 22 matches and two byes for each side....

El Segundo wins 2007 Cox Plate

El Segundo ($7) won the prestigious Cox Plate by two lengths from Wonderful World ($41) with Australia's most highly-valued racehorse Haradasun ($5) was third. Miss Finland, a five time Group 1 winner, was the Cox Plate favourite at $4 but only managed fourth spot.

Serious Speed upstaged the favourite's El Daana, Jestatune and Absolut Glam and became the first late entry to win the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield yesterday. Trainer Leon Macdonald said Serious Speed was not nominated for the $1 million VRC Oaks (2500m), however there is provision for Serious Speed to get into the Oaks as a late entry at a cost of $55,000 which must be paid by November 1.
