The Group One Doomben 10,000 this Saturday looks to be a fascinating match race between reigning world champion sprinter, Takeover Target, and super filly Gold Edition. A win for Takeover target will see him well primed for another international campaign, while victory for Gold Edition would further enhance her claims to become Horse of the Year.

The Run For The Roses

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

They call it “The Run For The Roses”, and its one of the richest and most exciting races in the world. Today will be no exception with the best 3 year old colts on the far side of the pond doing battle in the first leg of their Triple Crown.

Curlin has only had two runs but he won both races by a combined distance of 15 lengths so he heads the market - and who can argue? But the thing about the Kentucky Derby is it’s fierce competitiveness. It’s seems vaguely obscene that in 2004, the brilliant Smarty Jones (9 races, 8 wins and over $2,000,000 in prize money) went off at around 4/1, and last year the awesome but ill-fated Barbaro (4 wins from 5 races, $1.8 million in prize money) was available at 8/1 before he destroyed a top class field by 6 1/2 lengths. Those victories were separated by the victory of Giacomo who won at 50/1 in 2005. It’s a race of quality, and a bit of research and luck could lead to a big reward.

Guineas at Newmarket

Friday, May 4th, 2007

The build up to this race has been a bit like a bad episode of Dallas. First the highly fancied Holy Roman Emperor was retired to stud after George Washington was suspected of firing blanks. This apparently left the way clear for Teofilo to claim the first leg of a Triple Crown, but there was more drama as he drifted alarmingly in the betting - after a mystery source reported that he had suffered a setback in his training. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, his trainer Jim Bolger was fast asleep and didn’’t hear his phone as frantic journalists tried to contact him for a comment on this sensational news.

Nothing suspicious whatsoever –only this Thursday Teofilo was withdrawn from the race. All that’s needed now is Larry Hagman to show up at Newmarket with a big smirk on his oil-loving face. But if you backed Teofilo with Paddy Power, don’t fear as they are doing the decent thing and refunding all Ante Post bets on the long time favourite for the race. That’s a refund of over €£112,500!

After all the drama, Paddy Power are paying 1/4 Odds 1-2-3-4 places on the race, which will make it a lot easier to land a winning bet for the race. With the two favourites now ruled out, a number of high class runners look very tempting at big prices, so this is the perfect time to make the most of our Extra Place Special.

The whole Guineas meeting at Newmarket is a tremendous weekend of racing. On the Sunday, the fillies take to the stage with the 1000 Guineas. This race should provide a ray of sunshine for Jim Bolger - he trains Finsceal Beo, the warm favourite for Sunday’s feature race. It’s set to be an enthralling contest and one filly to look out for could be Scarlet Runner. She recently lowered the colours of second favourite, Sander Camillo and could spring an upset at a big price.

2000 Guineas

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

After returning a cool €112,500 in ante-post stakes on Teofilo, Paddy Power are paying FOUR places in the 2000 Guineas. And just to complete the package we’re offering 10% cashback on all placepot, quadpot, jackpot and Scoop6 bets placed this weekend! With the Scoop6 jackpot set to hit £1,000,000 this Saturday that should be all the encouragement you need.

More on that below, but first the confirmation of what pretty much every other bookie won’t be doing tomorrow:

2,000 Guineas Extra Place Special
3.25 Newmarket

Paddy Power are paying 1/4 ODDS 1-2-3-4 PLACES on the race!
