The F1 season opener, the Bahrain Grand Prix has been cancelled by Bernie Ecclestone. Bahrain’s crown prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifah took the decision himself because of anti-government protests in the kingdom, which led to deaths last week and over the weekend. With revolutions sweeping across the Middle East it’s not a surprise decision. Taking so long to make the call was questionable.
For die-hard F1 fans the season will have the launch it deserves. The Melbourne race, the traditional opener before Bahrain paid $40m to first stage the event, and another $20m to be the first race in the schedule!
Mark Webber said: “They know what is going on out there and they have made their call, so let’s go to Melbourne. Back to the good old days. It would have been nice to go to Bahrain but we have to wait a bit longer to have our first race and that just happens to be my home race. I always look forward to going down there. It’s a sensational event.”

See you at the race
