Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Jockey Calvin Borel guided Super Saver along the rail most of the way to score a decisive victory in America’s most famous horse race. This was trainer Todd Pletcher’s his first victory in the American classic race for 3-year-old horses taking home around $1.2 million out of the $2 million purse.
With rain most of the night and rain most of the day, the track was very sloppy. Twenty horses went to the post, at odds ranging from 6-1 to 34-1. Super Saver (8-1) covered the track in just over 2 minutes as the second-choice behind favourite Lookin At Lucky. Florida Derby winner Ice Box used a late run to finish second in the field of 20, just nipping Paddy O’Prado at the line.
Jockey Calvin Borel has won the Kentucky Derby three times; 2007 (Street Sense), 2009 (Mine That Bird), and 2010 (Super Saver).
